How it works
Three steps
01
See where you are
Answer questions about how things actually work today — not how they're supposed to work. There are no right answers, and nobody's marking you. You get a score out of 5 for each area and an honest picture of what's going well and what isn't.
02
Decide where you want to be
You don't have to be brilliant at everything. Pick the level you're aiming for, and be realistic about it. Knowing what you're aiming at is what turns a score into something useful.
03
Get a plan to get there
See what to work on first, and why it matters. Come back in a few months, answer the questions again, and watch whether the number actually moved.
In plain English
What's “maturity”?
It's a word people use for how consistently an organisation does something well. Not how clever anyone is — whether the good result happens every time, or only when the right person happens to be in the room.
Calibrate scores it from 1 to 5:
- 1
Initial
It depends who's on shift. Things get done, but nobody could repeat it on purpose.
- 2
Developing
Some habits are forming. They hold up on the work that gets attention.
- 3
Defined
It's written down and people actually follow it.
- 4
Managed
You measure it, so you notice when it slips before anyone complains.
- 5
Optimizing
You're steadily making it better, on purpose, as a habit.
Most organisations sit around a 2 or a 3 on most things. That is completely normal, and it's a much better starting point than a flattering guess. An honest low score is useful. A generous one just makes real progress look like going backwards later.
What we look at
Nine areas, three parts of the business
Start with whichever one is causing you the most trouble. One area done properly beats five you never finish.
Product
How well you work out what people actually need, and design things that genuinely work for them.
Technology
How well you handle your data, build and ship software, and put AI to work.
Operations
How well the day-to-day running of the place holds up — your processes, your projects, and how decisions get made.
Who it's for
You don't need to be an expert
Calibrate is built for the people running the work, not for consultants. If you can describe how your team actually operates, you know enough to use it.
It's most useful when you can feel that something isn't working but can't quite name it — or when you need to show someone else, with evidence, why a thing needs fixing.
Find out where you stand
Pick one area and answer the questions honestly. It takes about ten minutes, and you'll know more about your organisation at the end of it than you did at the start.
